Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Nyesom Wike, is set to host a meeting of eminent leaders and key stakeholders of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at his residence in Life Camp, Abuja.
The meeting, sources say, may not be unconnected with the deepening internal crisis within the party and growing uncertainty surrounding the fate of the planned PDP National Convention.
Party leaders are expected to deliberate on whether the convention, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, should proceed as planned. The National Convention Organising Committee, NCOC has maintained that the event will hold as scheduled despite ongoing legal and political disputes.
Federal High Court Abuja had on October 31 delivered judgement halting the convention, ruling that the party violated its own constitution and internal guidelines. The court directed the PDP leadership to address all outstanding procedural issues before proceeding with the convention.
However, a separate court of coordinate jurisdiction in Oyo State later delivered a counter-judgement, further complicating the party’s legal and organisational situation.
Only on Wednesday, the Federal High Court Abuja in a separate matter filed by former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido granted an order stopping the planned PDP National Convention in Ibadan. Lamido has approached the court with claims that he was denied the right to buy a nomination form and contest for the National Chairmanship position of the party.
