Senate on Tuesday mourned the passing of former lawmaker who represented Delta North Senatorial District in the 8th and 9th National Assemblies, Peter Nwaoboshi who died at the age of 68.

The tribute follows a motion raised by Senator Ned Nwoko, who described the death of Senator Nwaoboshi as a great loss to Delta State, the Anioma nation, and the country at large.

Senator Nwaoboshi was elected into the Senate in 2015 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to represent Delta North and later defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC in 2021. He served in the National Assembly until 2023 and was Chairman, Senate Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.

He was also a two-time Chairman of the PDP in Delta State. Born in Delta State, the late senator was an alumnus of the University of Benin and was widely regarded as a seasoned public servant devoted to public service.

In their contributions, senators described him as a prominent, hardworking, and courageous lawmaker who never shied away from expressing his views on national issues.

Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, expressed condolences to the government and people of Delta State, noting that the late senator made significant contributions to the legislature.

Also contributing, Senator Victor Umeh recalled that they sat close to each other during the 8th Senate, describing Senator Nwaoboshi as calm and composed despite his seniority and vast political experience.

He noted that Nwaoboshi remained firm and vocal on issues until his death, which he described as shocking.

The Senate observed a minute of silence in his honour and resolved to convey its condolences to the family of the deceased, the people of Delta State, and Nigerians at large.

The chamber also resolved to liaise with the family in making arrangements for his burial.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s House of Representatives has also expressed sadness over the passing of Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, who represented Delta North Senatorial District in the 8th and 9th Assembly

In a letter of notification addressed to the House Speaker by member representing Aniocha-Oshimili Federal Constituency, Ngozi Okolie, the late senator was described as an exceptional leader, a devoted public servant, and a seasoned politician who was committed to addressing the developmental challenges of the Niger Delta region as chairman of the NDDC.

The House also observed a minute silence in his honour.

Senator Nwaoboshi passed away on Friday, December 19, 2025 at the age of 68.
