Panic gripped the ancient town of Offa in Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State on Boxing Day after heavy metallic objects, believed to be military debris, reportedly fell from the sky into parts of the commercial community.
Eyewitnesses said a loud, frightening mechanical sound was heard moments before metal fragments landed in residential and public areas, including the Adeleke axis and the popular muslim Eid praying ground, damaging buildings and sending residents fleeing for safety. Five persons reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries, while no life was lost. At least two structures, including parts of a hotel and a residential fence, were damaged, heightening tension across the community.
Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, dispelled rumours of a bomb explosion or an American military aircraft crash. He explained that the incident involved an ordinance, adding that police IED experts have since evacuated the debris and commenced discreet investigations. He assured residents that the situation is under control.

Security analysts suggested the objects were booster stages or casings that detach mid-flight after fuel exhaustion, while the warhead continues to its target. Reports indicate the projectile’s flight path may have passed over parts of North-Central Nigeria, including Kwara State.
Residents have been warned not to touch the debris, as experts cautioned that such materials may contain toxic chemical residues.
Meanwhile, calm has since returned to the affected areas as security agencies continue monitoring to prevent further casualties.
