Ahead of the reopening of schools in phases by the Niger state government, the National Association of Niger State Students (NANISS), National Headquarters, has expressed strong opposition to the decision by the State Government to reopen a few schools despite lingering security challenges in parts of the state.
In a statement issued on Saturday, January 10, the student body warned that the move could endanger the lives of students, teachers, and non-teaching staff, stressing that safety must remain the top priority in any education-related decision.
NANISS maintained that reopening only selected schools creates inequality within the education system and exposes some students to unnecessary risk, while others remain protected.
The association noted that several students are unable to attend school due to insecurity in their communities, with some forced to travel from unsafe areas to access education.
The association further cautioned that resuming academic activities under such conditions could disrupt the state’s curriculum structure, worsen existing inequalities, and negatively affect the overall education sector.
NANISS while calling on the state government to reconsider its decision, urged authorities to first address security challenges comprehensively before reopening schools.
It also appealed for collaboration with stakeholders and security agencies to design a sustainable safety framework for learning institutions.
Among its demands are the immediate closure of all schools until security is fully guaranteed, equal educational rights for all Niger State students, support for learners affected by insecurity, and the development of a comprehensive security plan for schools.
Reaffirming its ⁿ⁹resolve, the NANISS leadership stated that it would remain steadfast and vocal in defending the welfare and safety of students across Niger State, echoing its message: “Education for all, safety for all.”
