Rivers State House Of Assembly

Internal dissent appears to be growing within the Rivers State House of Assembly, as two additional lawmakers have called for the withdrawal of impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.

The Deputy Minority Leader, Barile Nwakoh, alongside Emilia Amadi, joined earlier appeals urging the House to abandon the impeachment process and embrace dialogue in the interest of peace and political stability in the state.

Calls for restraint and reconciliation are gaining momentum within the Rivers State House of Assembly as impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy continue to stir political tension.

Just days after the Minority Leader, Sylvanus Nwankwo, and the lawmaker representing Degema Constituency publicly appealed for an end to the process, two more members have added their voices, intensifying pressure on the House leadership to reconsider its approach.

Barile Nwakoh, Deputy Minority Leader and representative of Khana Constituency One, and Emilia Amadi, who represents Obio/Akpor Constituency Two, have urged their colleagues to withdraw support for the impeachment and pursue a negotiated resolution.

The development has triggered mixed interpretations within political circles. Some analysts see it as evidence of deepening divisions within the Martin Amaewhule-led Assembly, with at least four lawmakers now openly opposing the impeachment drive.

Others interpret the move as part of a broader call within Rivers State’s political class for de-escalation and dialogue, amid concerns that prolonged political instability could affect governance and development.

The Rivers State House of Assembly formally initiated fresh impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his deputy about two weeks ago, citing alleged constitutional breaches and misconduct.

As pressure mounts from within the Assembly, attention now turns to whether the impeachment process will proceed as planned or give way to dialogue.
