Renewed wave of attacks on security formations in Enugu State has claimed the lives of two police officers, as gunmen on Thursday night attacked a police checkpoint around the Police College area along Agbani Road in the Enugu metropolis, setting an operational vehicle ablaze.

The attack, which occurred at about 8:42 p.m., triggered panic in the area as residents fled for safety amid intense gunfire.

Eyewitnesses say the assailants arrived in a coordinated manner, opened fire on officers manning the checkpoint, and set a police operational vehicle on fire before fleeing the scene.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said the attackers opened fire on the police team without provocation, noting that operatives responded swiftly, forcing the gunmen to flee with suspected gunshot injuries.

According to SP Ndukwe, two officers sustained critical injuries and were rushed to the hospital, where they were later confirmed dead.

He added that police recovered a Lexus 330 Jeep earlier snatched by the attackers and used for the operation, bearing multiple bullet holes from the exchange of fire.

The police spokesperson further disclosed that, in the aftermath, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Bitrus Giwa, has ordered an intensive manhunt, directing operatives to deploy all available resources and actionable intelligence to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.
