Renewed wave of attacks on security formations in Enugu State has claimed the lives of two police officers, as gunmen on Thursday night attacked a police checkpoint around the Police College area along Agbani Road in the Enugu metropolis, setting an operational vehicle ablaze.
The attack, which occurred at about 8:42 p.m., triggered panic in the area as residents fled for safety amid intense gunfire.
Eyewitnesses say the assailants arrived in a coordinated manner, opened fire on officers manning the checkpoint, and set a police operational vehicle on fire before fleeing the scene.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said the attackers opened fire on the police team without provocation, noting that operatives responded swiftly, forcing the gunmen to flee with suspected gunshot injuries.
