The Senate has described the judgment of the Court of Appeal affirming its constitutional authority to discipline erring members as a landmark decision that reinforces the powers of the National Assembly under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Reacting to the ruling delivered on Monday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio congratulated the upper chamber, noting that any institution that operates without law and order risks descending into anarchy.

He stressed that legislative discipline is essential for the stability and credibility of the parliament.

According to him, the Court of Appeal affirmed that the Senate’s rules are derived from the Constitution and that its Standing Orders must be respected and obeyed at all times.

Akpabio further stated that any earlier suspension imposed by the Senate should be viewed in light of the appellate court’s judgment and the constitutional authority vested in the upper chamber to regulate its proceedings and sanction misconduct.

He added that the ruling is expected to strengthen the Senate’s institutional authority in enforcing its rules and maintaining order within the chamber.
