It was a gathering of leaders at the 18th edition of the Leadership Annual Conference and Awards in Abuja.
Speaking at the conference with the theme: “Political Stability and Sustainable Development in Africa: An Increasingly Unstable Global System – A Roadmap for Nigeria,” United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed called for stronger institutions, greater accountability, and the protection of a free press as essential to Nigeria’s growth.
She warned that the global order is facing serious disruptions, with rising military spending and weakening international cooperation. Quoting Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, she cautioned against Africa becoming a battleground for ideological struggles.
Amina Mohammed acknowledged Nigeria’s 25 years of uninterrupted democracy and highlighted reforms including the ₦330 billion cash transfer programme and moves toward universal health coverage. She also praised President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and commended First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for prioritising women and vulnerable groups.
The First Lady, who received the Leadership Person of the Year 2025 award, said selfless service and compassion can transform the nation, dedicating the honour to collective efforts.
The event also recognised outstanding leaders, including several state governors, for their contributions to national development.
The conference comes at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with political and economic reforms – challenges participants say reflect a broader global trend in an increasingly unstable world.
