Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara

Rivers State House of Assembly has officially dropped the plan to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu from office.

Speaker of the Assembly, Martin Amaewhule informed the house that the withdrawal of the impeachment proceedings followed the intervention of President Bola Tinubu.

He also informed the house that all court cases filed by the Governor, his deputy and the Rivers State House of Assembly have been withdrawn.

For months, the state has been on the edge of a political precipice, but the intervention of the Presidency appears to have finally forced a retreat.

The Assembly leadership noted that the decision was necessary to prevent further breakdown of law and order in the state.

This latest development is the result of a marathon reconciliation process brokered by President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa Abuja.

The rift, which primarily centred on the power struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, had paralysed the legislative arm for some time.

Recall that the political climate in Rivers State reached a boiling point earlier this year when the Assembly served impeachment notices on the Governor and his deputy alleging gross misconduct against them.

Reports indicate that part of the truce between the Governor and the lawmakers was the recent dissolution of the State Executive Council, which is seen as part of the broader agreement to accommodate various political interests in a new cabinet.
