Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has met with the 23 Local Government Chairmen, their Vice Chairmen, and the 244 Councillors in the state to discuss ways to strengthen democracy at the grassroots level.
Governor Aliyu described the grassroots as an important segment of society that cannot be relegated, hence the need to deliberate on how best to ensure they reap the dividends of Governance
He added that the current administration is executing various developmental projects across the state and urged local government councils to extend similar initiatives to wards within their respective areas.
The Governor also explained that the meeting would examine the progress and challenges facing the ongoing e-registration exercise at the grassroots level, with a view to proffering lasting solutions.
He expressed appreciation for the impressive turnout of APC supporters during the e-registration exercise and called on party members who are yet to register to do so without further delay.
Governor Aliyu said the meeting assessed the strengths and weaknesses of the APC across the 23 local government areas to enable the party take proactive measures where necessary.
He called on stakeholders to freely contribute positively toward achieving set objectives.
The State APC Chairman, Isa Saddiq Achida, applauded Governor Ahmed Aliyu for being accessible to the people and the party at all times.
He said the Governor’s open-door policy has provided the party leadership the opportunity to offer advice on issues of concern.
According to him, the Governor’s inclusive leadership style is responsible for the massive transformation being recorded across the state.
The State Commissioner for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ibrahim Dadi Adare, praised the Governor’s foresight in convening the meeting with local government elected officials.
He said the meeting provides an avenue to examine issues related to the local government system in the state.
