The Department of State Services, DSS, has arrested a suspect linked to the recent attack and assassination threats against the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi in Benin City, Edo State.

The incident occurred on February 24, 2026 when gunmen opened fire during a political meeting attended by Peter Obi and other chieftains of the African Democratic Congress, hosted by a former APC National Chairman John Oyegun, forcing them to flee the venue.

Security sources say shortly after the attack, a man identified as Udeme Monday Stephen allegedly claimed responsibility on social media, issuing further threats against Peter Obi and warning of additional attacks.

The DSS is said to have launched immediate covert investigations, deploying forensic and digital tracking tools which led to the arrest of the 26-year-old suspect in Rivers State.

The suspect, who is reportedly a teacher at a private secondary school in Eliozu, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State, is currently in DSS custody and is expected to be charged to court.

The DSS says it remains committed to acting on credible intelligence and protecting lives and critical national assets, regardless of political, ethnic, or religious considerations.
