A civil society organisation, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, is calling on the judiciary to establish special courts for the speedy trial and prosecution of rape cases across the country.

National Coordinator of the association, Emmanuel Onwubiko, made the call at a media briefing in Abuja.

He described it as disheartening that many rape cases are allegedly swept under the carpet, leaving victims to live with lasting trauma, stigma and rejection.

Onwubiko urged the judiciary and state authorities to rise to their responsibilities to protect young girls from paedophiles and rapists.

He also called on the judiciary to ensure adequate protection for victims by diligently prosecuting offenders.

Onwubiko further alleged that several rape cases reported across Nigeria have seen suspects walk free, while victims continue to suffer emotional and psychological trauma.
