The Senator representing Rivers West district in the National Assembly, Ipalibo Banigo, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Banigo, who previously served as Deputy Governor of Rivers State under the administration of Nyesom Wike, said her decision is based on her resolve to align with her political mentor, Nyesom Wike, and the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, in supporting the President Tinubu’s reform agenda, which she said has led to improvements in the nation’s economic outlook, currency stability, and infrastructure development.

Her defection is contained in a letter read on the floor of the Senate by President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.

In the letter, Banigo noted that her decision followed extensive consultations with her constituents, political associates, and key stakeholders across her senatorial district.

According to her, the prevailing internal divisions, prolonged leadership disputes, and ongoing litigations within the PDP have weakened the cohesion and effectiveness of the party.

She added that she believes the APC offers a more stable and progressive platform to advance the legislative and developmental interests of her constituency and the country.

Senator Banigo also commended President Tinubu for fostering political stability and strengthening governance through peace-building and reconciliation efforts in Rivers State

She further pledged her support to the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, in consolidating what she described as the motherly role she has played throughout the President’s political journey.

The Rivers West district Senator expressed optimism about working with her colleagues in the APC in the 10th Senate to continue serving the people of her constituency and contributing to policies and legislation that will positively impact Nigerians.
