The Ondo State Government has commenced the clearing of waterways across the riverine communities as part of efforts to improve water transportation and enhance security for residents and travellers.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Gbenga Omole, who led the riverine bush-clearing team to several riverside communities, said the initiative was approved to ensure safer and smoother movement for people who rely on water transport.
According to available statistics, between January 2025 and March 2026, Nigeria recorded about 250 deaths from waterway accidents.
To address poor navigation, submerged objects and flooding during the rainy season which are some of the major causes of boat mishaps, the Ondo State Government has begun clearing water hyacinths and overgrown vegetation along the waterways in coastal communities of the state.
The Special Adviser to the State Governor on Transportation, Gbenga Omole, said the exercise will not only improve safety on the waterways but will also support fishing and trading activities in the affected communities.
Some community leaders present during the exercise commended the state government for the initiative.
The exercise is currently ongoing in four local government areas, namely Okitipupa, Ilaje, Irele, and Ese-Odo in Ondo State.
