Niger Tornadoes secured a crucial victory over league leaders Rivers United in a rescheduled Nigeria Professional Football League fixture at the Bako Kontagora Stadium in Minna, ending a seven-match winless streak.

Tonerdoes had struggled in recent weeks, slipping down the league standings.

However, they returned to form thanks to a decisive goal from Terdoo Shimagande, whose 67th-minute strike proved enough to secure all three points.

Rivers United started the match strongly, dominating early proceedings and creating several chances. Their efforts were repeatedly denied by Tornadoes goalkeeper Ifeanyi Nchekwube, whose impressive saves kept the hosts in the contest.

Niger Tornadoes gradually grew into the game towards the end of the first half but were unable to break the deadlock before the interval.

After the restart, the home side showed greater urgency and attacking intent. Their persistence paid off when Shimagande found the back of the net, ending a goal drought.

Rivers United pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages but were unable to find a breakthrough, as referee Grema Mohammed brought the match to an end.

Speaking after the game, coach Majin Mohammed of Niger Tornadoes expressed appreciation for the support his team has received and praised the players’ resilience against a strong opponent.

The victory lifts Niger Tornadoes to 10th place on the NPFL table. They will next travel to Abia State to face Abia Warriors in a Matchday 31 encounter.
