President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas, PiCNG, as part of efforts to reposition Nigeria’s transport and energy landscape.

The initiative will now operate as the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles, PiCNG & EV, with a broader mandate to drive the country’s clean mobility strategy across gas-powered and electric vehicles nationwide.

According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday , the expanded initiative will coordinate the development of infrastructure and investments required to support both compressed natural gas and electric vehicle adoption across the country.

The statement noted that PiCNG & EV will continue to oversee the deployment of critical CNG infrastructure, including mother and daughter stations, integrated refuelling units, and nationwide vehicle conversion programmes.

It will also anchor the rollout of electric vehicles, EV charging infrastructure, and related investments, in line with the government’s push for affordable and environmentally sustainable transportation.

The Presidency says gas remains a strategic fuel for Nigeria’s transport sector, given the country’s abundant resources, with the potential to reduce costs, enhance energy security, and conserve foreign exchange.

President Tinubu has also directed the Executive Chairman of PiCNG & EV to immediately establish a coordinated framework for the rapid deployment of vehicle conversion kits, ensuring affordability and accessibility for Nigerians.

To support this, the initiative is expected to collaborate with CreditCorp Nigeria, financial institutions, and other partners to develop financing models that will ease the burden of conversion costs.

The President further ordered the accelerated deployment of Mobile Refuelling Units to improve access to CNG nationwide while permanent infrastructure continues to expand.
