Bauchi State Government has approved the immediate suspension of commercial activities in selected cattle markets across Alkaleri, Bauchi, Kirfi, and Tafawa Balewa Local Government Areas.

The decision, approved by Governor Bala Mohammed, is part of efforts to address growing security concerns linked to the operations of the affected markets.

A statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor, Mukhtar Gidado, said the suspension affects several identified markets across the four local government areas.

In Alkaleri Local Government Area, the affected markets include Alkaleri, Mansur, Futuk, Yalo, Gwana, Yalon Gurza, Kuka, Rimi, Pali, Bokwas, Kwaimawa, Mai-Ari, Gajin Duguri, and Maina Ma’aji.

In Bauchi Local Government Area, Liman Katagum Market is affected.

Markets affected in Kirfi Local Government Area include Lariski, Bara, Sharfuri (night market), Cheledi, and Boli.

In Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area, the affected markets are Burga, Bununu, Ball, Kulumbo, and Zwall.

The government said the measure was taken to curb security threats associated with the markets, including cattle rustling, banditry and kidnapping for ransom, extortion, illegal arms exchange, and other criminal activities.

The statement further noted that the markets had increasingly become targets for criminal elements, leading to the disruption of trading activities and food supply chains, as well as significant economic losses to traders and surrounding communities.

The suspension, according to the government, is temporary and will remain in place until there is a significant improvement in the security situation.

Security agencies have been directed to ensure full compliance with the directive, while local government authorities and traditional rulers, including Emirs, District Heads, and Village Heads, have been tasked with sensitizing residents and ensuring effective monitoring of the order.
