Two Chinese nationals have been arrested by the Niger State Government for violating regulations prohibiting unauthorised mining activities.

The arrest followed a strategic inspection led by the Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Muhammad-Qasim Danjuma, at the Zuzungi Mining Site, as part of intensified enforcement efforts against illegal mining.

In a statement, the ministry’s spokesman, Maureen Dibie, said the operation uncovered illegal mining in clear violation of existing laws regulating the sector in Niger State.

The suspects, found operating without valid licences and outside approved guidelines, were handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The inspection team, which included the Permanent Secretary, Directors of the Ministry, and security operatives, underscores the state government’s renewed resolve to clamp down on illegal operators, regardless of nationality.

Speaking during the exercise, the Commissioner reiterated the state’s zero-tolerance stance:
“All individuals and entities must follow due process, obtain the necessary licences, and comply with environmental and safety regulations. Any violation will attract swift sanctions.”

He added that illegal mining undermines government revenue, poses environmental risks, and threatens the safety of host communities.
