Doctors in public and private healthcare practice across Nigeria have called on the Federal Government and well meaning Nigerians to stand up against the persistent abduction harassment, and maltreatment of medical practitioners by kidnappers and security agencies who are supposed to protect them in the course of their duties.
Speaking during a protest in Ikeja, the Lagos State capital, they noted that a Doctor constantly harassed and intimidated is deprived of the courage needed to focus or attend to any medical emergency.
It is a protest comprising members of the Nigerian Medical Association NMA and Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners around Ikeja in Lagos State, South-West Nigeria.
They say their action became necessary to address latest developments that impact negatively on their duties.
The situation according to many potents danger for the country’s health sector, coming at a time when the work force is already depleted following the migration of most Doctors abroad for greener pastures due to push factors like low remuneration and poor working environment.
