The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has issued a warning over a growing trend of criminals impersonating its officers to deceive and exploit members of the public.

In a statement issued by EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, recent intelligence reveals that these individuals are increasingly using sophisticated tactics.

According to the statement, they target unsuspecting youths, falsely accuse them of internet fraud, and forcibly take their valuables. In many cases, these impostors wear fake EFCC uniforms and transport victims to locations designed to look like official EFCC offices.

In another pattern, armed criminals are stopping motorists under the guise of checking vehicle details. They intimidate victims with weapons and extort money using fabricated allegations.

Additionally, the statement says some online impersonators and content creators are staging fake EFCC raid, videos-featuring forced entries, broken doors, and dramatised “sting operations.”

The anti-graft agency warns that these misleading portrayals risk convincing the public that such unlawful acts are carried out by legitimate EFCC officers.

The Commission urges the public to remain vigilant and critically assess such claims. The EFCC operates under clearly defined procedures, and there are established channels for reporting misconduct or lodging complaints against its personnel.
