The Senate has declared the Ondo South Senatorial seat vacant following the appointment of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, announced the development, directing the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to conduct bye-election to fill the vacancy within 30 days, in line with the provisions of the law.

Senator Ibrahim has formally assumed office as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, after presenting his letters of credence to UN Secretary-General António Guterres on April 20, 2026, in New York.

Until his appointment, he represented Ondo South in the Senate and served as Chairman Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs.

He is a lawyer and businessman, and holds a Ph.D in War Studies from Harvard University
