A major milestone in West African diplomacy has been reached in Abuja following the official handover of the new ultra-modern ECOWAS headquarters building, constructed by the Chinese government.
The $31.6 million state-of-the-art facility, which construction started in 2022 is located along the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Expressway, popularly known as Airport Road and is designed to centralise the regional bloc’s operations.
The Chinese government built edifice has been nicknamed “The Eye of West Africa,” marking a new chapter in regional integration and international partnership.

The old ECOWAS Secretariat headquarters located on Yakubu Gowon Crescent, in Asokoro District of Abuja, was built by Nigeria during the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida and inaugurated in 1991. This followed the relocation of the country’s capital from Lagos to Abuja.
