The World Health Organisation (WHO) says Nigeria currently has an estimated 66,000 licensed Doctors Serving a Population of 230 Million, and requiring, 400,000 to meet International Standards.

While the increasing digitalization of the Nation ‘s health care system seems to be a Positive step in covering up for this gap in manpower shortage occasioned by brain drain, some experts worry about the possible consequences.

Speaking in Lagos, in commemoration of the 2026 World family Doctors Day, the medical personnel appealed to the federal Government to ensure that the digitalization Process is guided by equity and Empathy in the best interest of Patients.

In the face of re-emerging infectious diseases, the family Doctors re-affirmed commitment to Patients care with a free medical outreach for over two hundred residents in Ajeromi ifelodun local government area of Lagos state.

They also urged Government to prioritise digital training of health care practitioners.

Family Doctors also known as family Physicians are medical experts who provide comprehensive health care services to Patients of all ages.

19th of May every year is designated as world family Doctors day to appreciate the vital role they play.

With the 2026 theme focusing on ” Compassionate Care in a digital world” the importance of maintaining Empathy for human Patients is taking centre stage in the celebration.
