BAYELSA

About two years after the Bayelsa State Government released its report on environmental pollution caused by oil exploration, members of the investigative team say the experience still leaves them traumatised.

The concerns were raised during a courtesy visit by members of the now decommissioned Bayelsa State Oil and Environmental Commission to Governor Douye Diri, represented at the meeting by Deputy Governor Peter Akpe.

Leader of the International Working Group on Petroleum Pollution in the Niger Delta, Professor Engobo Emeseh, said the delegation was in Bayelsa State to engage stakeholders on the devastating health implications of oil pollution on residents of the Niger Delta.

Responding, the Deputy Governor Akpe described the commission’s report which was submitted to Governor Diri on October 28, 2024 as a critical document in the pursuit of environmental justice and sustainable development.

He assured that the Governor Diri administration would continue collaborating with environmental experts and relevant stakeholders to ensure the recommendations of the report are fully implemented.
