Former Edo State Governor and Senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole, has been named an ambassador of the 2026 Okpekpe International 10-kilometre Road Race.
Speaking with the AIT Sports Crew, the 74-year-old politician described the Okpekpe Road Race as a clear example of how sports can drive development and economic growth in rural communities.
Oshiomhole, whose administration constructed the Okpekpe road during his tenure as governor, expressed delight over the recognition and says he looks forward to actively participating in the event.
He noted that the annual international race has helped place Okpekpe on the global sporting map while attracting investment, tourism, and infrastructure development to the community.
Oshiomhole also called on political office holders across the country to demonstrate stronger commitment towards rural infrastructure development, stressing that improved access roads and social amenities can transform local communities.

In the same vein, former Deputy Governor of Edo State and now Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports, Philip Shaibu, says he is equally ready for the race and looks forward to competing alongside Senator Adams Oshiomhole noting that with increased collaboration the 11th okpkpe road is breaking new grounds
With a certified World Athletics Road Race Medical Director on ground and live streaming of the event on the World Athletics platform, the 11th edition of the Okpekpe 10-kilometre Road Race promises excitement for spectators, athletes, and residents of the host community.
