If you’re still an active tobacco smoker, health authorities want you to know that nicotine addiction is stronger than ever.
This is why as Nigeria observes the World No Tobacco Day, officials are demanding tougher actions to protect citizens from the deadly grip of tobacco.
This year’s global theme, “Unmasking the Appeal,” exposes how the tobacco industry intentionally designs products to lure first-time users and young people.
In Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital in South-South Nigeria, health officials are warning that tobacco remains a top preventable cause of death. It is directly linked to fatal conditions like heart disease, stroke, and cancer.
Beyond the medical toll, experts say the habit is draining family finances and overwhelming healthcare systems. Local residents are now being urged to reject the deceptive marketing of nicotine products and actively support smoke-free environments.
To combat the threat, Rivers State is currently collaborating with international partners to tighten tobacco control policies. The primary focus is expanding public protections against the dangers of secondhand smoke.
