Teachers in Oyo State, South-West Nigeria on Tuesday took to the streets of Ibadan in protest over the kidnap of school pupils and their teachers in Esiele, Oriire Local Government Area.

The demonstrators, led by members of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, marched through parts of the metropolis to demand urgent government intervention. They called on authorities at both state and federal levels to ensure the immediate and safe release of their abducted colleagues and students.

Speaking during the protest, the teachers condemned what they described as the “senseless kidnapping” and said the incident had left schools and families in fear across the state.

The protesters also urged owners and operators of private schools to join the struggle by shutting down academic activities in solidarity until government takes decisive action.

The abduction in Esiele last week has continued to spark outrage, with residents, parents, and education stakeholders calling for stronger security measures to protect schools and students in Oyo State.

Government officials are yet to issue a fresh statement on the latest protest.
