Nigeria’s House of Representatives resumed from its four-week recess on Tuesday to a gale of defections as 13 members announced a switch from their political parties.
House Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, who read the notices of defection during plenary, explained that the defecting members attributed their decisions to persistent internal crises, unresolved leadership disputes, and factional divisions within their former parties.
Among the defecting lawmakers are Gaza Jonathan representing Keffi-Karu-Kokona Federal Constituency of Nasarawa State, who moved from the Social Democratic Party, SDP to the Labour Party, LP; Alex Egbona representing Yakurr-Abi Federal Constituency of Cross River State, left the All Progressives Congress, APC for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP while Esosa Iyawe representing Oredo Federal Constituency of Edo State, defected from the APC to the National Democratic Congress, NDC.
Sani Lawal representing Zango-Baure Federal Constituency of Katsina State, exited the APC for an undisclosed party; and Shehu Dalhatu representing Faskari-Kankara/Sabuwa Federal Constituency of Katsina State, joined the PDP from the APC.
Six lawmakers from Oyo State joined Governor Seyi Makinde in the Allied Peoples Movement, APM. They include Adebayo Adepoju, Adedeji Olajide, Ojo Akinola, Oyedeji Oyeshina, Oyekunle Folajimi, and Abass Adigun.
Other defectors are Etanabene Benedict representing Okpe-Sapele-Uvwie Federal Constituency of Delta State, who moved from the LP to the PDP, and Auwalu Gwalabe representing Katagum Federal Constituency of Bauchi State, who left the PDP for the APM.
