National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has warned that one hundred and seventy-eight communities across twenty-eight local government areas in Kano State face moderate flooding risks this rainy season.

NEMA Director-General, Zubaida Umar, revealed this in Kano during the launch of the 2026 National Preparedness and Response Campaign.

Recent forecasts by NiMet and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency indicate that multiple regions in Kano State are highly vulnerable to flooding this year.

Representing the NEMA Director-General, Northwest Zonal Director Aliyu Shehu highlighted that these 178 communities require immediate, targeted preparedness measures to prevent disaster.

State officials are responding to the warning with pledges of direct action.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf—represented by Environment Commissioner Dahiru Hashim—reaffirmed Kano’s commitment to reinforcing flood control infrastructure and building climate resilience.

This ongoing campaign is part of NEMA’s nationwide strategy to boost public awareness, coordinate emergency responses, and protect lives and livelihoods throughout the 2026 rainy season
