The Ogun State Government says efforts are being intensified to uncover the exact source of the foul odour that has repeatedly affected schools and communities in parts of Ijebu-Ode.
The government has confirmed the presence of methane gas in some of the affected locations and says environmental experts are working round the clock to determine the source of the emissions.
The mysterious gas and offensive chemical odour around Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, ijebu ode that got over 100 students and teachers hospitalized, started in April 2026.
It has gotten the Ogun State Government on its toes to unravel the mystery offensive odour
Africa Independent Television in a chat with the commissioner for Education science and technology, Prof Abayomi Arigbabu gave an insight to the incident.
Prof Abayomi Arigbabu said the state government had engaged professionals from the Olabisi Onabanjo University, the University of Agriculture and some stakeholders to solve the problem.
He however said some measures have been put in place to mitigate the effects.
When the incidents first surfaced, authorities suspected that certain human activities within the community could be responsible for the unusual development.
Environmental officers subsequently carried out investigations into possible chemical-related activities and other practices within the area, but preliminary findings have largely ruled out those possibilities.
The state government assured the residents that the riddle will be resolved shortly.
