Schools in Zamfara State categorized as Green and yellow have been reopened after about five months closure due insecurity in the State.

A visit by AIT’s correspondent in the State to some schools in Gusau, the State capital, indicated that both public and private schools have resumed but with low turn out of pupils.

According to some principals of schools visited, the low turn out of pupils and staff was due to the short notice by the Zamfara State Government.

Zamfara State Government had shutdown both Public and Private schools in September 2021 following the abduction of 80 students of Government Day Secondary School, (GDSS) Kaya in Maradun local Government Area of the State.

Since then, schools in the state have remained shut until Sunday when the Zamfara State Government announced the reopening of schools under category green and Yellow but ordered that schools ‘on red’ will remain shut until the security situation improves in those areas.

Most private schools in the State said they have lost most of their staff who left for other States to search for jobs.

On the other hand, financially buoyant parents have moved their children to neighbouring States of Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi and Kaduna to continue their education.

Some of the pupils were delighted to be back to school after the long stay at home.

They called on Government to ensure security around schools to prevent any possible attacks by bandits.

The Zamfara State Governor, Bello Mohammed had earlier said arrangement have been concluded with security agencies to deploy adequate security Operatives to all schools in order to protect students and staff.
