Nigeria’s House of Representatives has withdrawn its proposed constitutional amendment Bill seeking to establish State Police.
This follows the transmission of a similar Bill by President Bola Tinubu to the House Speaker at Tuesday’s plenary.
President Tinubu in the letter explained that the Executive Bill incorporates additional safeguards to ensure that the creation of a dual policing structure towards addressing evolving national security challenges can be achieved quickly and effectively to the benefit of all Nigerians.
The President noted that the proposed legislation is a critical component of his administration’s strategy to reorganize Nigeria’s security architecture to better protect citizens, expressing confidence that the House of Representatives will act quickly to consider and pass the Bill.
Lawmakers, in their resolution, withdrew the House version of the Bill and immediately passed the Executive-sponsored State Police Bill through first and second readings.
The Bill was subsequently referred to the House Committee on Constitutional Review for further legislative action.
The House is expected to give the Executive Bill clause by clause consideration when the Constitution Review Committee presents its report.
