Amid growing allegations on social media linking him to the death of a female member of his staff, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, has denied any wrongdoing, describing the claims as false, malicious and politically motivated.

He called for a thorough police investigation, including an autopsy, to determine the actual cause of death.

The Minister made the remarks while speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the presentation of the Joint Tracking Report, organised in partnership with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.

According to Umahi, the deceased, Mary Habila, had a documented medical history and had received treatment at a hospital in Türkiye, with records of her to health condition and medical expenses available for verification.

He also clarified that, contrary to reports circulating online, Habila was a nurse and not a physiotherapist.

Providing updates on the Federal Government’s road infrastructure programme, Umahi said construction is progressing steadily on President Bola Tinubu’s four flagship highway projects, which he said are designed to improve connectivity, facilitate trade and stimulate economic growth across the country.

The Minister also dismissed claims that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is responsible for flooding in parts of Lagos State, South-West Nigeria. He maintained that engineering assessments indicate the project is helping to mitigate ocean surges and improve coastal resilience rather than worsen flooding.
