African countries have adopted a communique to strengthen regional cooperation, institutionalise effective prisoner classification systems, and expand the responsible use of technology in correctional administration across Africa.
The decision was taken in Abuja at the conclusion of a three-day Regional Conference on Prisoner Classification and the Use of Technology in Prison Settings in Africa.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Controller-General of Nigeria’s Correctional Service, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, noted that technology is an indispensable enabler of modern correctional administration, stressing that its success depends on competent personnel, effective data management, institutional accountability and sustained collaboration among criminal justice stakeholders
The Inter-Regional Adviser and Team Leader on Prison and Penal Reform, Philipp Meissner, said the conference is a demonstration of Africa’s commitment to the implementation of practical solutions capable of transforming correctional administration across the continent.
Organisers say the successful hosting of the conference reinforces Nigeria’s leadership in correctional reforms and its commitment to fostering regional partnerships that promote public safety, human dignity, and sustainable criminal justice development across the African continent.
