The Federal Government has unveiled a community-driven livestock development project in Kwara State to improve animal production, create jobs and strengthen food security.
The Director of Ranch and Pastoral Resources Development in the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, Hakeem Ibilade, disclosed this during an inspection of the project site in Ijagbo, Oyun Local Government Area of the State.
He said the initiative places host communities at the centre of planning, implementation and ownership to ensure sustainability.
Ibilade said the Federal Government has approved the construction of a modern, environmentally friendly goat housing facility designed to improve livestock management, reduce labour and eliminate offensive odours.
He explained that the project integrates modern animal husbandry with indigenous knowledge to enhance productivity rather than replace traditional practices.
The Kwara State L-PRES Project Coordinator, Olusoji Oyawoye, described the initiative as a major boost to livestock production and rural economic development in the state.
The traditional ruler of the host community, the Onijagbo of Ijagbo land, Oba Sharafadeen Adeniyi Buhari, alongside farmers’ representatives, commended the Federal Government for the project while calling for a veterinary hospital, animal identification and traceability systems to maximise its benefits.
The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development reaffirmed its commitment to providing technical support, capacity building and strategic partnerships to ensure the project’s success, expressing confidence that the initiative will become a model for sustainable livestock development nationwide.
