The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NIHSA has issued a seven-day National Flood Advisory, warning of a medium flood risk in 17 states across the country from July 21 to July 27, 2026.
The agency says localised flooding is expected along major river channels and floodplains as water levels continue to rise at several critical monitoring stations.
NIHSA Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, says river levels at Saminara on the Karam River, Waya Dam Site on the Waya River, and Amber on the Amber River have exceeded watch and warning thresholds, while 16 gauging stations nationwide are recording elevated water levels.
He urged state governments, local authorities and residents in flood-prone communities to take immediate precautionary measures to safeguard lives, property and critical infrastructure.
