The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has approved the appointment of General Officers Commanding to the newly established Nigerian Army Divisions across the country.
In a statement signed by the Acting Director Army Public Relations Colonel Apolonia Anele, the appointments followed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval for the creation of four additional divisions to boost military operations.
The statement said the move is aimed at strengthening the Army’s force structure, expanding its operational presence and enhancing its capacity to tackle Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
The Nigerian Army says the new divisions will commence operations as they attain Initial Operational Capability, while efforts continue to achieve Full Operational Capability.
The newly created 5 Division, headquartered in Makurdi, will oversee Benue, Nasarawa and Kogi States, while the 9 Division in Ilorin will cover Kwara and Niger States.
The 10 Division, based in Jalingo, will be responsible for the border areas of Taraba and Adamawa States, while the 83 Division in Benin City will supervise Edo, Delta and Bayelsa States upon activation later this year.
To lead the new formations, Major General Yakubu Yahaya has been appointed General Officer Commanding 9 Division and Commander of Operation Savannah Shield, while Major General Chinedu Ralph Nnebeife will head the 10 Division in Jalingo.
Major General Moses Gara takes charge of the 5 Division in Makurdi alongside Operation Whirl Stroke, while Major General Auwalu Mahmuda has been posted to command the 2 Division in Ibadan.
The Army also announced the activation of three new brigades to reinforce the new divisions. Brigadier General A.O. Odubiyi will command the 11 Brigade in Gboko, Brigadier General A.M. Haruna will lead the 29 Brigade in Kainji, while Brigadier General R.M. Aminu has been appointed Commander of the 10 Brigade in Lafia.
Lieutenant General Shaibu congratulated the newly appointed commanders and urged them to provide effective leadership, maintain operational momentum and uphold professionalism.
