The violent attack that led to the beheading of at least four natives of Okporojo community, Oso Edda, in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, may be resolved with Tuesday’s passage of a new Bill by the Ebonyi State House of Assembly restoring the delisted Amasiri Development Centre.
The January 29, 2026 gruesome attack on Okporojo community, allegedly carried out by suspected Amasiri warlords, provoked a series of sanctions by the state government, including the imposition of a curfew on Amasiri community, which lasted three months; the dethronement of two traditional rulers; the dismissal of all indigenous Amasiri political appointees serving in the state government; and the passage of an Executive Bill repealing the law that created the Amasiri Development Centre, among other measures.
The Ebonyi State Government had, at the time, justified its actions, insisting they were part of security operations aimed at preventing further carnage and restoring law and order in the affected communities.
A non-kinetic approach to restoring security and order in the Amasiri/Okporojo crisis is now being adopted.
At plenary on Tuesday, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Moses Odunwa, announced the government’s decision to revisit the Development Centre delisting law, following what he said were official letters from the Amasiri community appealing for the reinstatement of the Development Centre.
The lawmakers noted what they described as the Amasiri community’s total repentance and turnaround from its “evil acts.”
The House of Assembly therefore repealed Law No. 001 of 2026, which delisted the Amasiri Development Centre, and subsequently passed an amendment Bill restoring Law No. 007 of 2007, which established 13 Local Government Areas and 64 Development Centres in Ebonyi State.
A statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly noted that the new Bill, which is a key step towards achieving a lasting solution to the Amasiri/Okporojo crisis, will be transmitted to Governor Francis Nwifuru for assent.
