Police have confirmed an attack by gunmen on a Catholic Church in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, with three persons, including a seminarian and a catechist, abducted in the early hours of Sunday.
The incident occurred at a church in Inoyi, Affa community.
A video circulating on social media showed distraught villagers recounting the attack while commending security operatives for their swift response, even as they lamented their inability to pursue the fleeing gunmen.
Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said a joint security team comprising Police operatives, Forest Guards and members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group immediately launched a rescue operation and is on the trail of the attackers.
According to the Police, the operatives mounted pressure on the fleeing suspects, forcing them to abandon one of the victims, who was rescued unhurt.
The gunmen, however, escaped with the remaining two victims, as security operations continue to secure their safe release.
