It has been established that breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways of ensuring a healthy start to life for every child.
Despite its health benefits, misconceptions, inadequate support systems, and workplace challenges have prevented many mothers from exclusively breastfeeding their babies.
As part of activities marking the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week, Zenith Medical and Kidney Centre in Abuja brought together expectant and nursing mothers, healthcare professionals and caregivers to raise awareness on the importance of breastfeeding and the need for stronger policies that protect and support mothers.
Dr. Olalekan Olatise noted that creating a breastfeeding-friendly environment requires the collective efforts of government, employers, healthcare institutions, and communities.
They called for the effective implementation of policies and stronger enforcement of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative to enable more mothers to breastfeed exclusively.

Other health professionals stated that beyond the health benefits for infants, breastfeeding also promotes faster recovery for mothers after childbirth while encouraging spousal support.
The programme also addressed widespread myths and misconceptions surrounding breastfeeding.
They stressed that most mothers can successfully breastfeed when they receive accurate information and adequate support from healthcare providers and their families.
Expectant mothers were educated on proper breastfeeding techniques, correct positioning and attachment, as well as practical ways to overcome common breastfeeding challenges.
