A major international effort is stepping in to bridge the learning gap that has left thousands of children in IDP camps in Benue State out of formal education as the United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF, backed by the Swedish International Development Agency, has handed over renovated classrooms, learning tents, and essential supplies for six displaced persons camps in Benue State.

The initiative aims to put more than 2,400 displaced children back on an accelerated track to literacy and basic education.

For thousands of children living in temporary camps across Benue State, the daily reality of displacement has long meant missing out on basic education.

Today, that narrative is beginning to change.

UNICEF, in partnership with Sweden’s international Development agency, officially handed over four newly renovated classroom blocks, 250 desks, and learning kits for six IDP sites—including Abagana, Daudu, and Ortese.

The intervention centers on an Accelerated Basic Education Programme.

Designed as a condensed nine-month track, the strategy aims to rapidly bring over 2,400 out-of-school children back into mainstream literacy and numeracy.

To ensure long-term continuity, 62 local camp residents were recruited and trained as volunteer facilitators.

State officials say integrating teachers from within the displacement community is critical for sustainability.

For the educators living inside the camps, the robust training provides both an opportunity and a mission to mentor the next generation despite harsh conditions.

As humanitarian agencies work to resolve the root causes of displacement in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, these classrooms represent something equally vital a sense of normalcy and a path forward.

State officials have urged local camp leaders to safeguard the newly installed infrastructure, while promising that the volunteer facilitators will eventually be integrated into the state’s permanent teaching service.
