The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO, and the government of Japan have commenced the training of 50 teachers, youths and volunteers in Niger communities in the areas of disaster management.
The training targets those in Mokwa that experienced devastating floods in 2025.

With Mokwa again topping the list of local government areas predicted to experience another flood in 2026 in Niger State, the UNESCO Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme is aware of the gaps between the availability of early warning information and timely community action.
The training initiative, which is part of a 12-month project developed in response to the increasing threat of flooding and climate change, targets about 500 community members with information on flood risks and safe response measures, with particular attention to the participation of women and young people.
At the end, the initiative is expected to enhance community flood preparedness, strengthen institutional coordination, as well as strengthen climate risk-informed decision analysis.
