The opposition African Democratic Congress, ADC has demanded accountability from the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government over the N15.8 trillion in additional resources reportedly generated following the removal of petrol subsidy and foreign exchange reforms.
While reacting to comments by the Director-General of President Tinubu’s re-election campaign council, Senator Abdul’aziz Yari who dismissed campaign promises by ADC to provide economic relief for Nigerians as a “lie,” the party’s national spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi in a statement questioned the impact of the increased revenues on the living conditions of Nigerians.
Abdullahi said the economic gains claimed by the government had not translated into improved welfare for citizens as figures attributed to the Federal Ministry of Finance showed that the removal of petrol subsidy and foreign exchange reforms generated about N15.8 trillion in additional resources for the Federation between June 2023 and December 2025.
The opposition gave a breakdown that about N5.4 trillion of the amount went to the Federal Government, N5.4 trillion to state governments and N3.9 trillion to local governments.
The ADC further reminded the federal government that states had received about N47.25 trillion in Federation Account Allocation Committee disbursements between 2023 and 2025, with allocations rising from N10.09 trillion in 2023 to N15.26 trillion in 2024 and N21.90 trillion in 2025.
The opposition spokesperson explained that monthly FAAC distributions had since crossed N2 trillion, compared with less than N1 trillion around the period before the removal of subsidy, disclosing that the increase in government revenue had not been reflected in the living conditions of Nigerians.
The ADC pointed out that petrol prices rose from about N185 per litre in May 2023 to above N1,300 by August 2025, while food inflation crossed 40% at some points during the period.
The opposition noted that transport costs also surged, while the Compressed Natural Gas, CNG mass-transit alternative promised by the Federal Government had yet to reach Nigerians on the scale required.
The ADC cited reports that about 20 states borrowed N458 billion in 2025 and called for details of projects funded with the increased revenues.
