Any country that does not prioritize research and development of its own natural medicine resources will suffer from medicine insecurity and miss out on the economic potentials in the sector for job and wealth creation.

This was the submission Of Some Researchers and Health experts during the Commemoration of the 2026 Africa Traditional Medicine Day in Lagos with the theme ” Reflection on Research and Development of traditional medicine, towards achieving Universal health Coverage for Africa.

Andrew Uloko is a professor of medicine and an endocrinologist,a specialist in kidney health. His position about traditional medicine and the need for collaboration between the Orthodox and traditional Medicine Practitioners resonates with that of the world health Organisation ( WHO) and the Professor of Pharmacy at the Nigerian Natural Medicine Development Agency Martins Emeje.

To set the stage right for the required collaboration, sustained investment in research by the private sector and government remains critical.

Africa traditional medicine day is marked 31st of August every year to honour the vital role that traditional medicine plays in health care across the continent.

The 2026 edition, which was marked with awareness walk in Lagos State, had as its theme “Reflection On Research and Development efforts of traditional medicine towards achieving universal health coverage for Africa.
