For half a century, a bitter land dispute between Bayero University, Kano, and its neighbouring communities has defied successive attempts at settlement.

But after decades of tension, there is finally a resolution, as Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf brokered a settlement to compensate affected buyers, resettle community members, and pay for structures on the disputed land.

For fifty years, Rimin Zakara and Rejiya Zaki communities have been locked in a bitter dispute with Bayero University, Kano, over ownership of portions of land adjoining the institution.

The dispute took a dramatic turn when residents of Rimin Zakara allegedly subdivided and sold portions of the land claimed by BUK to unsuspecting buyers, some of whom began building on the property.

The disagreement survived successive administrations, triggering confrontations and, in recent years, deadly clashes.

Determined to end the deadlock, Governor Abba Yusuf activated a settlement process through the Ministry of Lands and Physical Planning, led by Commissioner Abduljabbar Umar

The solution is simple but cost effective: compensate innocent buyers, resettle affected community members, and pay for eligible structures — in a settlement that ultimately favours the university’s claim.

The wisdom of dialogue has now brought the once-warring sides under one roof, in a mood of relief and optimism.

Governor Abba Yusuf, represented at the ceremony, says protecting Bayero University is central to the state’s educational ambitions.

He says preserving land for the institution means securing opportunities for generations yet unborn.

For Bayero University, the resolution is a welcome development.

For the affected beneficiaries, the intervention brings relief after years of uncertainty.

What confrontation could not achieve in fifty years, the Ministry of Lands and Physical Planning says it has achieved through diplomacy, dialogue, strategic planning, and a careful balancing of interests.

After decades of claims, clashes, and failed settlements, a dispute that once seemed impossible to resolve has finally found a path to closure.
