The Nigerian Army has warned personnel against drug and substance abuse, describing it as a serious threat to military discipline and operational effectiveness.
The warning was issued by the Chief of Army Staff at a sensitisation seminar on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and substance abuse in Kachia, Kaduna State.
The seminar, themed “Warrior Ethos: Building Ethical Leadership and Unit Cohesion,” focused on the need for soldiers to maintain ethical discipline, mental resilience and strong character while confronting contemporary security challenges.
Representing the Chief of Army Staff, the General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Major General Abubakar Wase, said drug and substance abuse could undermine fighting spirit, unit cohesion, personnel welfare and mission success.
He called for stronger prevention and education, alongside appropriate testing, counselling, rehabilitation and disciplinary measures where necessary.
The Army Chief also linked drug abuse with the psychological pressures associated with prolonged military operations, stressing that mental readiness remains an important component of combat preparedness.
He urged commanders to understand their troops, identify changes in behaviour and create an environment where personnel can seek psychological support without stigma.

Participants were encouraged to recognise psychological difficulties early and seek appropriate support as part of efforts to maintain a disciplined, resilient and effective fighting force.
