Plateau State Government has ordered the temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state as part of measures to prevent the spread of suspected diphtheria cases.
The directive, which takes effect on Monday, September 7, 2026, requires schools that have already resumed academic activities to also close and remain shut until further notice.
The government said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure following suspected cases of diphtheria reported in parts of the state, particularly Jos North, Wase, Jos South and Bassa Local Government Areas.
The Commissioner for Information, Joyce Ramnap, said the measure is aimed at protecting pupils, students, teaching and non-teaching staff and preventing further spread of the infection.

She directed school proprietors, administrators, teachers, parents and guardians to comply with the directive and ensure that pupils and students remain safely at home throughout the period.
The government appeals to all stakeholders to cooperate with the directive, stressing that further information on the resumption of academic activities would be communicated to the public in due course.
