Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has dissolved all adhoc committees with immediate effect, citing the expiration of the time frame alloted for them to conclude their assignments and submit reports.

A circular by the Clerk of the House of Representatives, Sidi Ibrahim, this Saturday, explained that the dissolution ordered by the House Speaker took effect from Friday, August 28, 2026.

The circular noted that the decision followed earlier announcements directing all adhoc committees to conclude their assignments and submit their reports in accordance with the rules and established practices of the House.

According to the circular, only two of the committees sought and obtained extensions of time in line with Order 18, Rule 5 of the House Standing Orders, adding that the two-week extensions granted to the said committees had since elapsed.

The Clerk further cited Order 18, Rule 11, Paragraph 5 of the Standing Orders, which provides for limitations as to the time within which committees are expected to submit their reports, maintaining that having exceeded the time allotted to them, the continued existence of the affected adhoc committees was no longer tenable.

The affected committee chairmen were directed to forward all outstanding reports, working documents, records and other materials relating to their assignments to the Office of the Clerk for safekeeping while asking members of the dissolved committees to take note of the directive and ensure strict compliance.

This development comes days after the adhoc committee investigating establishment of the controversial Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council submitted its preliminary report exonorating the Chief of Staff to the President.
