Plateau State has recorded 148 suspected cases of diphtheria, with 25 fatalities, as health authorities intensify efforts to contain the spread of the disease.

At the diphtheria isolation centre at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, about nine patients with suspected cases of the disease are currently being monitored and treated.
Among them is the child of Adeola Kolawole, who was referred to JUTH from neighbouring Bauchi State after falling ill.
According to the Chairman, Medical Advisory Council of JUTH, Dr. Njem Mainer, the hospital has recorded a surge in suspected diphtheria cases, with some patients unfortunately losing their lives.
The Plateau State Government has also extended the school holidays as part of measures to curb transmission, alongside other interventions aimed at containing the outbreak.
Beyond the extension of the school holidays, residents are being urged to take precautionary measures, including maintaining proper personal hygiene and ensuring that children receive routine vaccinations.
Health authorities say early presentation at healthcare facilities remains critical, particularly for anyone showing symptoms associated with diphtheria.
