A three-storey building has collapsed on Abidjan Street in Wuse Zone 3, Abuja, the nation’s capital.
Rescue operations are currently underway, with personnel from the FCT Fire Service, emergency management agencies, and the Police Response Team, led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, ACP Edward Akaniyene, already at the scene.
The joint rescue team also comprises officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Federal Fire Service (FFS), Department of State Services (DSS), Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), and other relevant emergency response agencies, all of whom immediately commenced search and rescue operations.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the building had previously been marked and sealed by the Department of Development Control, Abuja.
As of the time of this report, no casualties have been confirmed. However, search and rescue efforts are ongoing to determine whether anyone remains trapped beneath the rubble.
Authorities say further information on the extent of the damage and any casualties will be communicated as it becomes available.
Investigations are also ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding, and the possible cause of, the building collapse.
Meanwhile, the Police Command has urged residents to remain calm, avoid the affected area, and cooperate with emergency responders to ensure the smooth conduct of the ongoing rescue operation.
